After a varied career in broadcast journalism, Professor Glennon returned to graduate school in Speech Communication at UIUC in 1980. Since then she has worked for 22 years as a teacher; first as a graduate student at UIUC, then as Assistant Professor of Speech Communication at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and most recently as an Associate Professor of Speech Communication at Eastern Illinois University. In January 2002, she rejoined the University of Illinois and now has a joint appointment in ICR and Advertising where her teaching focuses on critical analysis of media messages. She has taught dozens of courses in communication at the graduate and undergraduate level on such topics as media criticism, television criticism, rhetorical criticism, communication theory, mass communication theory, feminist theory, the rhetoric of women, and the rhetoric of science fiction. Currently she is looking at the rhetoric of alternative social systems in science fiction. She has contributed to the Encyclopedia of Television as well as the Women's Studies Encyclopedia. She is a frequent reviewer for conventions and journals (e.g. Critical Studies in Media Communication, Journal of Communication) and is currently involved in curriculum development in Media Studies. She also acts as primary advisor for Media Studies and Advertising undergraduates.
