A series of weekly talks during April are part of the Initiative on Communications, Culture and Policy, sponsored by the Institute of Communications Research. All of the talks will be at 1:30 p.m. on Fridays (except April 8), and all will be in 231 Gregory Hall.

In the first talk, April 2, Noshir Contractor, a professor of speech communication, will speak on "The Role of Networks in Shaping Policy and How Policy Shapes Networks." Drawing on examples ranging from community arts participation to terrorist networks, he will discuss a framework for understanding how the discovery, diagnosis and design of social and knowledge networks shape policy and are in turn shaped by policy.

The remaining talks: on April 8, Ben Scott, a doctoral student in ICR, will speak on the media reform movement. Cary Nelson, a professor of English, will speak on "Academic Freedom in the Corporate University in the Security State" on April 16. On April 23, Paula Treichler, Dale Brashers and Marie Leger will speak on "Policy Perspectives on HIV/AIDS 2004." Treichler is the ICR director, Brashers is a professor of speech communication, and Leger is a fellow in International Programs and Studies. David Roediger, a professor of history, and Sundiata Cha-Jua, director of Afro-American Studies, will speak April 30 on "Making the Case for Reparations."
